PROGRAM

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the program?

We begin registration for the upcoming season August 1, 2011. At time of registration, we will set up a personal meeting to go over the program and review all forms that need to be signed. Shreducation season runs from Mid December until the end of March, training every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We also train Christmas Break and Spring Break. 52-56 days on snow.

What is the cost?

The entire season is 4,000.00 + HST, paid over 4 -7 installments throughout the season. Our price has not changed in the 9 years of running the program. Initial payment is due upon registration - NON REFUNDABLE. We also offer a day rate program of 60.00/day plus HST invoiced at the end of each training month. The day rate option is great for younger athletes and was created for athletes with schedule conflicts such as college, work etc.

Where do we train?

We train mostly at Blue Mtn Resort, but we have access and partnerships to most hills and clubs in Ontario. We also go on training trips dependent on the conditions.

Do I have to be a good snowboarder to sign up with Shreducation?

No. We take athletes of all levels, ages and abilities. We treat every athlete individually. At the beginning of the season, we help to outline his/her personal goals, then throughout the season monitor achievements and help the athlete progress towards his/her desired goals. We give full feedback on their initial ability and where we think they can go in snowboarding.

Can I join the Program if I just want to get better and develop my skills?

Yes of course! If you let us know what your expectations are and just want to become a better rider, we will do our best to help you improve. There are a ton of athletes we coach and have coached in the past who aim to get better and have fun. Being part of Shreducation is a cool experience! Being active on the weekends while learning new things and meeting new people is a great combination of fun and learning. Parents enjoy the fact their kids are supervised and enjoying a professional but fun atmosphere on the hill while learning great skills and values. We at Shreducation, coach snowboarding as well as coach manners, principles, responsibilities and life skills.

What trips do we go on?

Any athletes can go on the trips. Cost is dependent on location, duration and the number of athletes in attendance. Coaches will encourage the athletes to go on certain trips and enter competitions, but the end decision is up to the parent and athlete. The main trips we usually attend are: YLG Series, US Open, Burton Canadian Open and certain World Cups. We have a partnership with the TTR and summer snowboard camps such as COC in Whistler and Windells / High Cascade in Mt Hood, Oregon. Main local contests we attend: You look Good, Horeseshoe Open, AOS Series, Quiksilver DownLow.

How do we assess the athletes?

The first weekend of training is for assessment. We practice a variety of different drills and exercises on and off hill, to assess each athlete's skill level. Once all of the coaches have assessed all athletes, we divide them into groups dependent on age and ability level. From 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM every training day, the athletes are with the same coach. However, after lunch the entire team and coaches train together. At the end of every month, if an athlete is excelling in his group, he/she has the opportunity to take an on hill snowboard test to see if he/she can upgrade to the next level. We issue 2 report cards throughout the season, so the parents and athletes can monitor their progression.

Is there a meeting before the season to get more info and meet everyone?

Around the end of October early November, we hold a team meeting and meet/greet for all parents, athletes, coaches and all of our Shreducation affiliates. It is awesome! There are approx 150+ in attendance. We eat pizza, jump into the airbag, introduce training tools such as M2M and gyroboard, and give the riders all of their team gear and stickers. We give a 2-3 hour presentation on what to expect for the upcoming season. You can also register for your AOS, Canada Snowboard, and FIS licenses at this meeting with ease. There are guest speakers, Olympians , Media representatives and sponsors in attendance.

Is there a place for athletes and family to stay at Blue Mtn?

Accommodation: We do have a Team House at Blue Mountain. We charge $50.00 per night. This cost includes supervision by one of our coaches and a bedroom. Athletes need to bring their own food or money for food. Monthly rentals can be negotiated, but 100% commitment is needed at time of registration.

Why do we train at Blue Mountain?

We train at Blue because it makes sense. It is easily accessible, there are numerous choices for accommodation, eateries and activities for the entire family, as well as Blue Mountain has produced the most Pros out of Ontario. Parents don't want to spend their whole weekend driving to and from far away resorts.

What's the deal with the Double Cork?

The Double Cork is the result of a progressing sport. Jesse was the first person to do the double cork 900 and 1080 in the pipe in 1997. With his gymnastics background, he has helped concept and create the "Batcheloroll" with Olympian Jeff Batchelor. Shreducation has helped coach over 10 versions of this trick in both pipe and slopestyle to over 10 Shreducation Athletes. When asked by Yahoo Sports, the top coaches in the world gave their feedback on the double cork: "Jesse explained it the best." If you have not done a double cork, you shouldn't be coaching athletes how to do it. With the proper preparation and instruction, our athletes have never tried more than 5 times to land one of these tricks. Jesse has seen the consequences of this sport first hand and how bad they can be. Doing it right is very important and that is something we do 100%.

With a multiple amount of gymnastics and acrobatic backgrounds amongst the Shreducation coaching staff we can breakdown the mechanics and match of the tricks and execute them without a huge amount of risk.

Physical Education Credit?

Yes, you can get a full Highschool or Public School credit by being on Shreducation. If interested, please ask for further info and pricing.

What's the deal with the "School Rule"?

Education comes first! Snowboarding should not be the only focus in life. Although athletes pay for Shreducation, this program is a privilege, not a right. In order to maintain progression, the athlete is required to ride more than the average person, therefore he/she will miss some school. This means the athlete has to work harder at school to maintain good grades. The staff at Shreducation are constantly working with schools, parents and education facilities to make sure the athlete is maintaining good grades and the schools / teaching faculty is aware of the level of training the athlete is doing and to help him/her accordingly. Most pro snowboarders who maintained his/her education throughout their snowboarding careers are now the industry leaders and company owners who currently drive the sport. The athletes who didn't get a proper education, usually fall off the radar. Snowboarding is an extreme sport with extreme consequences and an injury can end the fun instantly. Falling back on an education is invaluable. After years of assessment, we have realized an athletes grades can fall approx 5% through the season and the athlete can get them back up to their normal average before the school season ends with ease. Anything more than that can be difficult. If an athlete falls below their average by more than 5% during the season, we will have a discussion about taking time off training to get the grades back up to where they need to be. We also offer P.E. Credits in order to open up your schedule and give you more time to focus on training and keep up with homework.

Transportation?

In the past, we have offered a shuttle service for a small fee from Orangeville to Blue Mountain. The Shred Truck leaves Orangeville Thursday evening and returns Sunday evening. We are considering a shuttle from a Toronto location; probably a central bus stop or subway station with the best access for the athletes. This will be decided dependent on the amount of interest for this service.

Do we get Coached by Jesse Fulton?

Yes, Jesse is one one of the coaches. He is a floater coach who spreads his knowledge around to each group of athletes. He is not assigned to a specific group. All of our coaches have been trained and are overseen by Jesse. Our unique coaching program was designed by Jesse, so although you may not be coached by him often, all of the coaches have been trained the same way. For the past few years, Jesse has focused on the athletes with Olympic potential. Now Olympics 2010 are over, he will be back on snow at Blue every weekend with the team. As a new generation of Shreducation riders aim for the next Olympics and becoming pro, Jesse will focus on them in 2013 / 2014 for those Games. He is keen to get back to grass roots and really help develop the next generation of athletes. If you want to work with Jesse on something (no matter what the level, trick or discipline), he will be allocating time to accommodate this. Jesse is always available for discussing the athletes and their progression and gets weekly reports on all the athletes. Whether you know it or not he is watching you.

Do I automatically get on the TV Show?

No, the TV Show was a marketing tool to create opportunity, money and publicity for the riders. Jesse concepted the show with the sole purpose of helping athletes fund their career and help them create more value with their sponsors. There are new shows in the works however, which can help our athletes in the future. But they are not yet revealed to the team or public.
